Thanks for checking out Petals, Pies and Otherwise! My name is Katy and I’m a Maryland native currently living in Ohio with my husband, our son, and our chubby cat. I am a stay-at-home mom, but also an agriculture/floral design teacher at heart.
I grew up in 4-H and FFA. Between these two organizations and my family, I developed an interest in everything agriculture, gardening, and baking. I spent years trying to perfect baking pies, horseback riding, raising livestock, and growing vegetables so I could bring home a few ribbons from the fair.
After college (Go Terps!), I spent 8 years as an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor. I taught a wide range of agricultural classes, but I enjoyed teaching floral design more than anything else. I had limited experience in the beginning, but by watching and learning from other agriculture teachers, florists, and books I was able to refine my skills. Eventually it evolved into much more than just a high school class – the students and I were filling floral orders for weddings and other community events! I loved every minute I spent working with flowers and sharing my passion with students.
Outside of school and work I have always found a sense of peace in my kitchen making baked goods. I constantly have ingredients on hand to whip up some cookies, and I rarely attend or host a holiday without baking my cranberry apple pie. My son even likes to help me bake now, which makes for one messy but happy kitchen.
A couple of years ago, I left my teaching position to move with my family to Ohio and became a stay-at-home mom. Although I love being home with my son (and the extra time I have for baking), ever since our move I have been looking for an outlet to share and teach some of my favorite projects along with all of the ups and downs that come with being a mom. I can’t wait to share some of my tips for flower design with you, along with some of my favorite recipes and craft projects, and some of my thoughts on motherhood.
